Loudspeakers for your home cinema

Home cinema should project the sound of movies realistically. For surround sound, 5.1 or more speakers are needed (refer to Basics to the right).

For the front 3 identical floorstanding would be ideal, but that doesn't work usually since the screen is in the way. Therefore, the centre speaker is placed horizontally (acoustically better would be a floorstanding speaker or even two of them, left and right of the screen).

The rear speakers are responsible for effects. Therefore, these speakers may sound slightly different than the front speakers.

• 5 x CT 209, an extremely popular and reasonably priced speaker with Tangband full range drivers (picture right); it just needs a subwoofer.
   
• or CT 203, a wall mounted speaker for restricted space. 5 of this type are needed for home cinama. Just two front speakers are needed for hi-fi stereo.
